Los Angeles is a city of endless possibilities, brimming with hidden gems, must-visit restaurants, and unique spots that cater to every taste and style. For fashion, food, and art lovers, Ysabel Hilado has shared her local tips. This guide is the ultimate insider’s look into the coolest parts of LA. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer, spending time away from typical tourist spots like WeHo, NoHo, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica reveals a local culture rich with hidden gems and small businesses. So, step off the beaten path, support small businesses, and experience the local culture like never before.

Favourite Neighbourhoods

Artesia and Cerritos. These two cities are LA County suburbs right next to each other, only 25 minutes away from Downtown LA (without traffic, of course). Ysabel has spent all her life and has really grown to appreciate it. She loves how central the area is as it’s right in between LA and OC so she's able to drive anywhere. There’s an abundance of yummy food and drinks there, and a large selection of boba and coffee shops!

Long Beach. It’s a large city in LA county with a downtown area and the suburbs around it. Ysabel says if you ask anyone around the area, they'll say Long Beach has its own culture and there’s a strong sense of community within it. There are events for all ages happening all the time throughout the city, many eateries choose from, and a lively nightlife.

San Gabriel Valley. Throughout this entire region of LA county, there’s an endless amount of food/drink spots to choose from as well as gorgeous parks and museums.

Best Restaurants

Park’s Finest on Temple. This Filipino fusion BBQ spot was a family discovery back in high school to Ysabel, and it quickly became a staple. One of her favorite dishes is the Timuay Beef Tri-Tip. It’s a melt-in-your-mouth experience, and the Cornbread Bibingka brings a unique twist to a classic comfort food. Each visit feels like a nostalgic trip back to those familial gatherings and delicious meals. The restaurant even made an apperance once on Guy Fieri's Diner's, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Hop Li in Chinatown has been her go-to spot. This bustling family-style restaurant is perfect for long, leisurely meals where catching up with relatives is just as important as the food. Plates of pan-fried chow mein noodles, veggie-loaded fried rice, and perfectly spiced kung pao chicken are always a part of their order.

Sake 2 Me in Cerritos, is an all-you-can-eat sushi spot that is consistently fresh and satisfying. The wait can be long, especially around dinner time, so it’s wise to get on the waitlist early. Ysabel ensures that the experience is worth every minute spent waiting.

Best Brunch

The Nest in Bellflower, a cozy neighborhood spot that serves up some of her favorites like crispy bacon waffles, savory potato tacos, and a spicy chicken biscuit. Paired with their mint mojito coffee, it's a breakfast worth waking up early for.

Bakers and Baristas in Cerritos, offers a menu with Filipino-inspired dishes that are equally tempting. Their fried chicken sandwich, flavorful pork belly bowl, and traditional tapsilog are just a few of the delights, perfectly complemented by an iced salted caramel latte.

The Attic in Long Beach is a staple. Known for its cozy home-restaurant vibe, this spot serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but truly shines during brunch. The chicken and waffles are a must-try, as is the hearty breakfast burrito, and the ricotta French toast is unparalleled.

Night Out Recommendations

The Bungalow in Long Beach has become one of her preferred destinations on a night out. Its aesthetic charm and indoor/outdoor setting make it ideal for a night out with friends. The ocean views and fresh air add to the ambiance, and the reasonably priced drinks make it a favorite spot.

Banana Bay in Rowland Heights transforms from a Thai restaurant into a lively night spot with unbeatable drink specials. Arrive for dinner and stay for the 2 for $10 cocktails and $5 shots. The live band on weekends ensures a great time, whether you're with a large group or a few close friends.

Lock and Key is known for its DJs and events, making it a hotspot for hip-hop, rap, and R&B lovers. While the space can get tight, the music and energy make it a must-visit for those looking to dance the night away.

Favourite Places to Shop

As a dedicated thrifter, Ysabels’ wardrobe is a treasure trove of secondhand finds. 2nd Street USA, with various locations in LA, has become a major source for her streetwear, designer, and vintage clothing needs. The Silverlake Flea offers curated, on-trend pieces, and knowing what you’re looking for can lead to incredible finds at great prices. And lastly, but definitely not least, Los Feliz Flea. Now located near Dodger Stadium, boasts a stunning view of DTLA and a variety of vendors, ensuring there's something for everyone.

Honourable Mentions

Some of Ysabel’s special mentions include art and museums in LA. Beyond the Streets celebrates graffiti and street art, now with a permanent location on La Brea. The Jeffrey Deitch Gallery is a go-to for modern and contemporary art exhibitions, while The Huntington Library in San Marino combines a vast library, museum, and botanical garden. It's perfect for a full day of art and nature, followed by a visit to Old Town Pasadena for food and shopping.

For additional culinary delights, Avenue 26 Tacos is ideal for a post-Dodger game or late-night feast. Nilly’s Burgers and Fries in Artesia offers delicious burgers and fries, while Sorry Not Sorry Creamery in Cerritos tempts with unique ice cream flavors.
